Estimation of the benefits of improved icing forecasts
Abstract
At present, the pilots, in particular GA pilots, and operators awareness and the MET data and information infrastructure in combination with the current icing forecast abilities does not ensure an optimum ice flying performance. This leads to avoidable incidents/accidents and cost. The benefits of improved icing nowcast and forecast have been estimated. These benefits are described related to a forecast scenario assumed for 2015 and compared with a typical scenario as of 2002 and to a perfect forecast scenario. Safety and efficiency of aviation could be significantly improved by improved icing nowcast and forecast and the related procedures. The paper explains the meteorological forecast scenarios and gives examples of the related safety improvements and cost savings.
