Retrieval of Isotopomer-Specific Ozone Vertical Profiles from Solar Infrared Spectra Recorded at Lauder, New Zealand.
Abstract
The isotopic composition of atmospheric ozone column over Lauder has been studied by high resolution ground-based solar Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometry, with retrievals being performed by the Optimal Estimation Method. Firstly, vertical profiles for the main isotopomer (16O16O16O) were retrieved in the 1001.3-1004.3 cm-1 interval. Five vertically independent partial columns were obtained and validated against independent microwave radiometer measurements, balloon sonde data and Dobson spectrophotometer data. Profiles of the minor isotopomers (16O16O18O, 16O18O16O, 16O16O17O, 16O17O16O) were then retrieved in separate spectral intervals with three vertically independent partial columns being achieved. For these retrievals, the profile of 16O16O16O was constrained to the previously retrieved profile, which was also used as the a-priori profile for the target species. Results are compared to previous ground-based, balloon-based and satellite measurements of isotopic enrichments in atmospheric ozone and found to have smaller uncertainties. The results should therefore provide useful data for validating proposed mechanisms for the anomalous mass-independent isotopic enrichments in atmospheric ozone.
