a Hermes Type Stern-Gerlach Source with Ecr Ionizer and Charge Exchange in Cesium Vapour for Intense Ion Beams of Negative Deuterium
Abstract
Motivated by the excellent performance of the Hermes atomic beam source, we try to combine for the production of negative polarized hydrogen ion beams an 80 K atomic beam source with an electron cyclotron resonance ionizer and with subsequent double electron pickup in cesium vapour. Our atomic beam source provides an intensity of 6.4×1016{H/sec} for hydrogen and of about 5×1016 {D/sec} for deuterium. Beam intensities of 9 μA were observed for negative vectorpolarized vec{D}- ion beams in two hyperfine substates with an emittance of about 5 π mm rad √ {eV} Vectorpolarizations of 65% and 70% have been observed for accelerated deuterium ions and protons, respectively.
