Electrodynamics of metallic photonic crystals and problem of left-handed light
Abstract
An analytical theory of the electromagnetic waves in a metallic photonic crystal is presented. The low frequency modes, obtained before experimentally and by computations, are studied. The dispersion equation and the expression for the electric permittivity are obtained. It is shown that the modes have a cutoff frequency, which is the root of the permittivity. The results for the cutoff frequency are in a good agreement with the experimental and computational data but they are far from proposed earlier analytical expressions. It is shown that if the system is embedded into a media with the negative magnetic permeability, it has no propagating modes at any frequency. Thus, such a system can not support the left-handed light (LHL). The experiments with LHL are discussed.
