Temperature-dependent x-ray diffraction measurements of the U-Nb (6wt%) shape memory alloy
Abstract
U-Nb alloys in the composition range <10wt% Nb exhibit shape memory effects and martensitic phase transformations which are still incompletely understood, due to the material's complicated texture and great sensitivity to temperature and applied stress. In particular, a possible relationship between the Nb concentration, lattice parameters, and relative stability of the monoclinic and orthorhombic phases remains to be investigated in more detail. We present temperature dependent x-ray diffraction measurements in the range 15-750 K, for an alloy with 6 wt% Nb. The Bragg peak positions and widths provide information about the lattice strain along with the structural parameters.
