Three-Dimensional X-ray Microtomography of Liquid and Solid Foams
Abstract
Synchrotron x-ray microtomography (XMT) can provide rapid determination of the three-dimensional structure of statistically large samples of many mesoscale materials. We report here measurements of the structure of several foams, including the first XMT study of a liquid froth. We find that three-dimensional image processing algorithms can be used to perform a virtual reconstruction of the materials, i.e. the representation of the structure as an idealized assemblage of vertices, edges, faces, and cells. We will compare and contrast our results and experimental technique with prior studies of foam topology.
