Computational Studies of an L-Band A6 Relativistic Magnetron*
Abstract
Three-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations and analytical circuit modeling are used to analyze an L-band A6 magnetron designed by Titan Systems Corp. that extracts power from two cavities located 120 degrees apart. Systematic simulations for the cases of zero, one, and two extraction ports show that the cavity coupling slots introduce a large perturbation in the magnetron operation. This perturbation results in significant mode competition between the pi and the 2pi/3 modes. In addition, the simulations show substantial corkscrewing of the beam that degrades the tube performance. Even so, the simulations indicate that nearly 1 gigawatt of power can be extracted from the Titan design. The circuit model suggests that employing a symmetric extraction scheme from three cavities can eliminate much of this mode competition. Simulation results of this concept will be presented. *This work was supported in part by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research.
