An X-Ray and Tev Survey of Blue Blazars
Abstract
The only two BL Lac objects well studied at X-ray and TeV energies, Mrk421 and Mrk501, emit roughly equally in synchrotron X-rays and TeV gamma-rays, at least during flare states. However, this says nothing about the average physical state in BL Lac jets. We propose an X-ray survey of 8 likely TeV-emitting BL Lacs, in coordination with HEGRA (north) and CANGAROO II (south), in order to measure typical SEDs. Targets are selected for high probability of TeV detection: synchrotron peaks at X-rays, high X-ray flux, and low redshift. The PCA fluxes probe TeV/X-ray ratios as low as 0.1, yielding interesting upper limits even for TeV non-detections and strongly constraining the normal physical state (B, Ne, Delta), in a way not accessible with observations in abnormal flaring states.
