Systematics of UCN Production in Solid Deuterium
Abstract
We have built a system to measure UCN production from solid deuterium placed in a flux of cold neutrons. Neutrons, created by the 800 MeV proton beam from LANSCE incident on a tungsten spallation target, are moderated to produce the cold neutrons. We have measured the UCNproduction rate as a function of the temperature and molecular state of the deuterium (ortho or para deuterium) and of the volume of solid deuterium. We have also measured the lifetime of UCN in the solid deuterium as a function of both temperature and ortho/para ratio. The data support the recent model of Liu, Young and Lamoreaux^1 for upscattering of UCN in solid deuterium. ^1C.-Y. Liu, A. R. Young, S. J. Lamoreaux, Phys. Rev. B, to be published Aug. 2000.
