Drop-Outs at High Redshift: Quasars and Galaxies at z > 5
Abstract
We present results from our ongoing deep, multi-color, ground-based program to identify high-redshift sources using the strong absorption signature due to the Lyman alpha forest. Initial observations covering 74 arcmin2 led to the discovery of a quasar at z = 5.50 and a galaxy at z = 4.99. Targets are selected on the basis of being R- and i-band dropouts. Our imaging data set reaches approximately RAB = 26, IAB = 26, and zAB = 24 (3 sigma limits in a 3 arcsec diameter aperture) and covers approximately 200 arcmin2.
