Charged-track multiplicity of B
Abstract
There are only ten stable charged particles (e, μ, π, K and p and their antimatter partners) that can leave tracks in our detector. Due to detector inefficiency, the charged particles sometimes get lost and undetected. Therefore, the original parent charged track multiplicity is different from what we observe. We are interested in finding the original parent charged track multiplicity of a B meson, both inclusively (all decays) and separately for the cases B-->lX (semileptonic) and B↛lX (nonleptonic). We have measured the charged particle multiplicity in inclusive, semileptonic 1 and nonleptonic BB decays: We find the mean multiplicity of 10.71+/-0.02+0.20-0.14 in inclusive BB decays, where the first error is statistical and the second systematic. Using the muon sample, we find the mean charged track multiplicities of 11.49+/-0.03+0.26-0.20 and 7.86+/-0.07+0.25-0.23 for nonleptonic and semileptonic BB events, respectively. Using the electron sample, we find the mean charged track multiplicities of 11.49+/-0.02+0.22-0.20 and 7.87+/-0.06+0.19-0.18 for nonleptonic and semileptonic BB decays, respectively. Using the lepton sample, we find the mean charged track multiplicities of 11.47+/-0.04+0.26-0.20 and 7.86+/-0.05+0.20-0.18 for nonleptonic and semileptonic BB decays, respectively. 1Note that both B's in the event decayed semileptonically.
