Decay Rate Measurement for ^7Be in Tantalum and ^7Be in Lithium
Abstract
Preliminary measurements of the decay rate for ^7Be in two different chemical environments have been made at the University of Massachusetts Lowell Van de Graaff Accelerator Lab. ^7Be decays by electron capture so that its decay rate is proportional to the electron density at the nucleus. Hence, ^7Be may decay at different rates when in different chemical environments. Samples of ^7Be in Li and ^7Be in Ta were prepared by proton-bombardment via the ^7Li(p,n)^7Be reaction. A quasi-differential setup similar to that first described by Huber et al.(P. Huber, St. Gagneux, H. Leuenberger, Phys. Lett., 27 B, 86 (1968)) in 1968 is being used to determine the difference in decay rates.
