Effect of resonance scattering to iron emission lines from A2319.
Abstract
The authors studied the effect of resonance scattering in the surface brightness distribution of emission lines for thin hot plasma, which filles the intergalactic space in clusters of galaxies. From the analysis of the cluster Abell 2319 they obtained the X-ray spectrum for the projected region within r = 6 arcmin, which corresponds to 600 h50-1kpc at the cluster. In the spectrum, the observed intensity ratio FeKα/(FeKβ+NiKα) is 3.2±1.4. Since the expected line ratio from the emission model for a thin hot plasma in collisional ionization equilibrium is ≡7, the observed ratio is significantly lower. This lower value is an expected effect of resonance scattering. To get a quantitative interpretation of this result, the authors performed a simple Monte-Carlo simulation of resonance line scattering. Based on this simulation, they discuss the non-uniformity of the spatial distribution of elemental abundance in relation to the observed value of the low line ratio.
