Spatial resolved spectra from M87 and Perseus cluster.
Abstract
Two famous cooling flow clusters of galaxies, Virgo Cluster (16 Mpc) (a giant elliptical galaxy M87 at the center) and Perseus Cluster (73 Mpc) are observed with the ASCA satellite, which is capable of imaging spectroscopy. The X-ray brightness distribution of these clusters is found to be nearly spherically symmetric and outstanding line features from highly ionized ions (O, Si, S, Ar, Ca, Fe, Ni, etc.) are seen in the X-ray spectra.
