First Evidence for the Decay KL arrow e^+e^-μ^+μ^-
Abstract
We report here the first evidence for the decay KL arrow e^+e^-μ^+μ^-. We have observed one event with an estimated background of 0.067^+0.057_-0.025 events. Based on this event, we determine the branching ratio to be B(K_L^0 arrow e^+ e^- μ^+ μ^-) =(2.9^+6.7_-2.4)× 10-9. In addition, we set a 90% confidence limit on the combined branching ratio for the lepton flavor violating decays K_L^0 arrow e^mp e^mp μ^± μ^± to be B(K_L^0 arrow e^mp e^mp μ^± μ^±) < 6.1 × 10-9 assuming a uniform phase space distribution.
