Comparisons of the Measured and Theoretical Modulation Depths of High-Tc SQUIDs and Magnetometers
Abstract
We have performed an extensive comparison between the measured peak to peak modulation depths of high-Tc SQUIDs with the predicted values obtained by numerically integrating the dc SQUID RSJ equations of motion including the effects of thermal noise. We have compared SQUIDs and magnetometers made using both step edge and bicrystal junctions with various SQUID inductances. Devices fabricated previous to 1995 had significantly smaller modulation depths when compared to the theory. As the I0 R value of the junctions increased, the discrepancies became systematically larger. More recently fabricated devices, with larger modulations depths, much better match the theoretical predictions. Some comparisons of the white noise performance of these devices with calculations will also be presented.
