The USNO gamma-ray burst counterpart search.
Abstract
From multi-satellite triangulation techniques several gamma-ray burst locations on the sky have been obtained with uncertainties small enough to allow deep optical imaging. The authors discuss the status of their ongoing multi-color imaging survey of gamma-ray burst positions. The inventory of the fields under investigation is searched for objects with "unusual properties" that might indicate an association with the burst phenomenon. Statistical studies of stellar and non-stellar objects in and near the error boxes can be performed to find possible burst counterparts associated with object classes that do not show unusual colors, high proper motion, variability, or high degrees of polarization.
