Temperature-drift instabilities in the earth's magnetosphere
Abstract
The temperature drift instability that is due to the presence of electron temperature gradients is investigated. It is shown that drift and kinetic Alfven waves can be generated in the magnetospheric plasma sheet. The wave frequencies correspond to the frequency range of Pc3 pulsations, which are frequently observed in the auroral zone.
