Supernova 1992am in Anonymous Galaxy
Abstract
M. Phillips, Cerro Tololo Interamerican Observatory; and J. Maza, University of Chile, report the discovery by R. Antezana (University of Chile) of a supernova located about 19".3 west and 1".4 south of the nucleus of a spiral galaxy at R.A. = 1h22m32s, Decl. = -4 54'.6 (equinox 1950.0). The supernova, of mpg about 18.5, was found on a 20-min unfiltered IIa-O plate taken by L. Wells and C. Muena (CTIO) with the CTIO Curtis Schmidt telescope on July 26.326 UT. Confirmation was made by N. Tyson and R. Gal (Princeton University) on B and V images obtained on July 29.42 with the CTIO 0.9-m telescope. A spectrogram (range 320.0-750.0 nm) was obtained by M. Phillips (CTIO) and A. Alonso (Columbia University) on July 29.39 with the CTIO 4-m telescope, showing that this is a normal type-II supernova with broad P-Cyg lines of H I and Fe II. The redshift of the parent galaxy is 0.048.
