VIRGO: a ground based interferometric antenna for gravitational wave detection above 10 Hz.
Abstract
A French-Italian collaboration plan to build a ground based antenna to detect gravitational waves in a wide frequency range from 10 Hz to a few kHz. The antenna is a high sensitivity interferometer with 3 km arms. Sensitivity in the 10 Hz region is achieved by means of ad-hoc suspensions for the optical components, in order to reduce the seismic noise.
