The vibrational modes of hydrogen adsorbed on Pd(110)
Abstract
High resolution electron energy loss spectra have been recorded for hydrogen (and deuterium) adsorbed on Pd(110) at 100 K. Measurements have been performed as a function of coverage in order to follow the adsorption-induced surface reconstruction. On the unreconstructed surfaces, hydrogen is adsorbed at a pseudo-three-fold site. Loss peaks are observed at 98 meV (790 cm -1) and 120 meV (968 cm -1). The reconstruction causes a decrease in the intensity of the higher frequency peak, even though the hydrogen coverage is increased. Hydrogen adsorbed in subsurface sites did not produce any new peaks in the spectra.
