A new method for detection of distant supernova neutrino bursts.
Abstract
The authors present a new concept for detecting neutrinos from very distant stellar collapse. The method uses the neutral current interaction of the νμ and ντ neutrinos and the subsequent detection of time correlated neutrons with an inexpensive neutron detector. Calculations for supernovae out to the Virgo Cluster are given with the expected backgrounds. Prospects for determining the neutrino mass are described. The authors also discuss the possibility of forming a coincidence between the neutrino detection and future gravity wave detectors.
