Improved computer modelling of magnetron injection guns for gyrotrons
Abstract
A variable mesh finite element electron gun design code was developed to simulate hollow beams produced by magnetron injection guns. Very accurate solutions of the self consistent space charge forces are obtained by using a computational mesh, distorted in a way which allows a high density of mesh points within the hollow beam. A generalized hybrid model for cathode emission has been incorporated which combines temperature limited and space charge limited emission in a way justified from empirical and physical arguments. Beam characteristics of a magnetron injection gun are presented as the transition from temperature limited to space charge limited operation is made. Comparisons with experimental results are presented.
