A generalized TEM analysis of broadside-coupled planar transmission lines with isotropic and anisotropic substrates
Abstract
It is pointed out that broadside-coupled planar transmission lines are commonly used in the design of directional couplers, filters, attenuators, baluns, and phase shifters, at microwave frequencies. A description is provided of a generalized, simple technique for analyzing the propagation characteristics of the multilayer, broadside-coupled planar transmission lines, with and without side walls. Attention is given to a computation of the even- and odd-mode characteristic impedances, the effective dielectric constants, and the modal phase velocity ratios of the broadside-coupled suspended microstrip. Numerical results are presented for the broadside-coupled suspended microstrip and the broadside-coupled inverted microstrip, suspended in the E-plane of the WR-28 waveguide.
