Signal generation with linear frequency modulation
Abstract
Instruments and techniques for generating both continuous and pulsed signals with linear frequency modulation are discussed. The treatment ranges from passive designs to systems with self-tuning and complex synthesizers. The capabilities of these systems are evaluated on the basis of frequency deviations, retuning rate, and frequency and phase errors. Specifications ensuring certain signal characteristics at the receiver output are selected, and the possible uses of such signals are discussed. Attention is also given to methods of predicting the linear frequency modulation of signals that guarantee a low sidelobe level at the output of the processing circuits.
