A la recherche des compagnons invisibles des étoiles doubles.
Abstract
The analytical techniques and results of a study of perturbations of binary stars that could signal the presence of invisible companion stars are presented. A binary system is characterized by the period of revolution of both stars, the date of the periastron passage, the orbital eccentricity, the semi-major axis, and the three angles orienting the orbit in space. The mean absolute average deviations from the distances of the maximum orbital points were calculated for various objects, together with the amplitudes and phases of observed sinusoidal perturbations, which were subjected to Fourier analyses as a function of time. Simulations revealed that the maximum detectable perturbation was in the range 0.07 arcsec, and deviations were calculated for each object studied. Ephemerides are provided for the Sirius invisible companion up to the year 2000. Finally, it is suggested that the periods of the companion stars will follow the same distributions as found with other many body situations, such as in the case of the planets and moons of the giant planets.
