Nonlinear dispersive interferometer
Abstract
The structure of a nonlinear dispersive interferometer is described and its function analyzed. Expressions are given for the phase shift of an object for light of different frequencies, the phase shift of the wave introduced by the object, and the difference between the phases in the interference pattern. The interferometer permits the pattern to be obtained without resort to holograms, but the use of anisotropic birefringent media for the nonlinear frequency conversion can lead to image distortion. Methods of combating this are discussed. The use of the instrument to study the plasma of a laser spark is described.
