Investigation of the kinematics of interacting galaxies - Motions in nests and chains
Abstract
Spectral observations of 12 close systems of interacting galaxies belonging to the type of nests and chains (according to the Vorontsov-Vel'iaminov preliminary classification) were made in 1977-1979 with the UAGS spectrograph and an image tube in the main focus of the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory. The velocities of the separate components were identified, and their luminosities, masses, and sizes were determined. The independent rotation of components in the systems VV 615, 731, and 141 was found. Most of the nests and chains studied belong to dwarf systems. In some cases the objects are likely to be single irregular galaxies. The average parameters have been obtained for components of dwarf compact systems with purely emission spectrum; these parameters are close to the corresponding values for giant H II regions.
