Secondary flows around oscillating asymmetric cylinders
Abstract
An experimental investigation was conducted in order to determine whether, when a cylinder with an asymmetric cross-section performs the sinusoidal oscillations, the secondary flow field involves a unidirectional flow component in addition to the circulatory streaming. The cylinders used included triangular, Joukowsky and fan-shaped profiles, and fluid containers covering a wide range of values for such physical parameters as angular frequency, maximum transverse dimension, working fluid kinematic viscosity, and oscillation amplitude. No evidence could be found of the existence of a unidirectional flow, and three types of flow pattern were observed when the Joukowski profile oscillated sinusoidally.
