Transform coding of PAL composite signals
Abstract
Investigations were carried out on the coding of PAL composite signals. The analog signal is sampled at a frequency just above Nyquist's, which can be derived in an easy way from the fundamental frequencies of the PAL system and is such as to ensure the formation of an orderly grating of sampler. The statistical properties of the sampled signal were derived and suitable transformations well matched to the signal statistics were employed. The differential pulse code modulation coding on the DFT coefficients of line blocks was investigated and a prediction algorithm was developed which can be applied on temporally successive lines. Two and three dimensional block transformations were also considered with artifices to lessen block visibility at low numbers of bits/pel.
