Design of a DSI terminal for domestic applications
Abstract
A Digital Speech interpolation (DSI) terminal developed for domestic satellite and terrestrial applications is described. System compatibility, echo control, channel capacity and performance, talkspurt clip occurrence probability, and signal-to-distortion performance considerations peculiar to terrestrial use are discussed, and the design of a microprocessor controlled 96/48 DSI terminal is described. The terminal includes an echo suppressor, merges 4 Tl signals into 2 Tl compatible bit streams, and provides a cost effective means to double channel capacity in existing terrestrial digital transmission facilities and domestic satellite systems.
