Design benefits of software and processing for TDMA terminals
Abstract
A TDMA terminal is generally divided into two main parts: the common TDMA terminal equipment which performs all the necessary control functions, and the terrestrial interface modules (TIMs) and specially the digital speech interpolation (DSI) TIM which permits doubling of the system transmission capacity. Software processing offers many advantages in implementing the complex functions required in sophisticated TDMA terminals. Some of these functions cannot be practically implemented without the use of a processor. The type of systems in which a processor would be advantageous to use is assessed. Application of processors in a prototype TDMA terminal developed according to INTELSAT and CEPT specifications is considered.
