Phase modulation of light in planar electrooptical waveguides
Abstract
A description is given of a phase modulator which consists of a quartz slab substrate and a thin LiNbO3 waveguiding layer arranged between the two control electrodes. The first planar electrode is obtained by depositing a thin gold layer on the quartz slab. Optical contact bonding is used to attach an LiNbO3 crystal to the gold film. Details concerning the modulation process are discussed and experimental results are considered.
