Rocketborne diagnostic instrumentation for an experiment to control vehicle potential
Abstract
Two payloads intended to control rocket to plasma potentials were designed and flown. Each payload contained an electron gun to control the vehicle potential by discharging electrons into the plasma. Space Science laboratory designed and fabricated the Langmuir probes, skin current probes and thermal emission probes used to measure vehicle potential and also to perform other diagnostic functions. Results from the first flight were used to modify the instrumentation for the second flight. Good data were received on the second flight and preliminary analysis indicates some additional improvements to the instrumentation would make future flights more useful in controlling and studying vehicle to plasma potentials.
