Modification of a vapour pressure osmometer
Abstract
The performance of a Hewlett-Packard vapor pressure osmometer, model 302B, used for the determination of number average molecular weight, was found to be unsatisfactory in that the instrument showed poor reproducibility and excessive drift. An investigation of the design indicated that these problems arose chiefly from a combination of thermal emfs and poor contacts. The electronics were modified to minimize the stray thermal, and noise potentials, reduce thermal dissipation, and move the balancing potential to a higher level. The performance of the instrument was improved by these modifications.
