Mössbauer Effect in Tb159
Abstract
The linewidth of the Mössbauer resonance of the 58-keV radiation from Tb159m has been measured with Dy159(as Dy2O3) and Gd159(as Gd2O3) sources and Tb4O7, Tb metal, and Tb2(CO3)3 absorbers, all at 80°K. The measured linewidths, extrapolated to zero absorber thickness, are 5.0+/-1.4 cm sec-1 for the Dy2O3-Tb4O7 system, 7.9+/-1.8 cm sec-1 for the Dy2O3-Tb2(CO3)3 system, and 11.5+/-1.0 cm sec-1 for a 22 mg cm-2 Tb metallic absorber. A few measurements with a Gd2O3-Tb4O7 system gave 10.1+/-1.0 cm sec-1 for a 27 mg cm-2 Tb4O7 absorber. The extrapolated value for the Dy2O3-Tb4O7 combination gives a calculated lifetime for this state of (9.6-2.1/+3.7)×10-11 sec, in reasonable agreement with the value (1.3+/-0.4)×10-10 sec determined by delayed-coincidence methods. A discussion of line-broadening mechanisms and a comparison with some other rare-earth Mössbauer observations as well as a discussion of the use of this Mössbauer resonance in low-temperature phonon experiments is included.
