Mathematical problems in seismology
Abstract
The purpose of this paper is twofold: (1) to call the attention of seismologists to certain mathematical methods available for application in seismology; (2) to bring to the attention of mathematicians a number of unsolved or partially solved seismological problems whose interest is largely mathematical. The principal problems in the theory of seismic waves relate to the complexities due to inhomogeneities in the media and other causes, and to new methods available for the study of the interior of the Earth.
