Theory and Experiment of Ultra High Gain Gyrotron Traveling-Wave Amplifier
Abstract
The gyrotron traveling-wave tube (gyro-TWT) is a millimeter-wave amplifier based on the electron cyclotron maser (ECM) instability. High power and broad bandwidth capability makes it an attractive source of coherent radiation. The current paper presents a brief overview of the gyro-TWT research over the past quarter of a century. Advances made by different groups employing various schemes are discussed and achieved performances are surveyed. This a followed by a focused study of an ultra high gain scheme as an illustration of the various stability issues involved.
