Right-handed-neutrino Majorana mass at the SUSY GUT scale and the solution of the solar-neutrino problem
Abstract
In the SUSY GUT scenario, it is natural to assume the right-handed-neutrino Majorana-mass scale to be 1016 GeV. This will in principle lead, by the seesaw mechanism, to a ντ mass of order m2t/(1016 GeV)~3×10-3 eV. This suggests that the solution of the solar-neutrino puzzle should be either the MSW effect in νe-ντ oscillations, with m2ντ~10-5 eV2, or long-wavelength νe-νμ oscillations, with m2νμ~10-10 eV2. These solutions require unexpectedly large mixings of νe with ντ and νμ, respectively. I suggest a model for the fermion mass matrices which makes almost the same predictions in the charged-fermion sector as the Dimpoulos-Hall-Raby model, but which can accommodate such large lepton mixings.
