Doping induced magnetic clusters and Co spin state transition in Na_xCoO_2 with 0.78<x<.97
Abstract
By muon spin rotation we investigated the magnetic properties of Na_xCoO_2 single crystals with x>0.75. We obtained evidence for hole doping induced magnetic clusters with antiferromagnetic (AF) spin correlations that result in a small total moment of \mu_{eff} ~1.5 \mu_B. At the lowest doping of 1-x=0.03 these clusters are isolated and exhibit a glassy freezing transition near T_f~20 K. At higher doping of 1-x>0.04 they being to overlap forming extended AF patches. A homogeneous AF state with signatures of (likely geometrical) frustration is achieved near 1-x=0.25. We explain these trends in terms of a hole doping induced spin state transition of the Co3+ ions.
