The X-ray pulsations of the isolated neutron star RX J1856.5-3754
Abstract
Using public data from the XMM-Newton archive we have discovered pulsations at 7 s in the isolated neutron star RX J1856.5-3754, thus confirming that this source is similar to the other six thermally emitting, nearby neutron stars discovered in soft X-rays with ROSAT. The pulsations are detected in eight XMM-Newton observations spanning from April 2002 to March 2007. Using the two latest observations, reported here for the first time, we derive a new upper limit of Ṗ<2.2×10-12 s s-1 (90% c.l.) on the period derivative. This implies a surface magnetic field smaller than 1.3×1014 G.
