The quasar 3C 345 at the highest resolution with mm-VLBI and space-VLBI
Abstract
VLBI images of the quasar 3C 345 typically show a core-jet structure formed by an unresolved, stationary, flat spectrum region (the ``core'') and several partially resolved jet components ejected at apparent speeds βapp ~ 2-20. 3C 345 is one of the best examples of component motion on helical paths. To get better constraints on the jet physics one needs to have a detailed view of the inner regions of the jet, which implies observing at the highest resolution available. This can be achieved in VLBI observations made at shorter wavelengths (mm-VLBI) or with longer baselines (space-VLBI). We applied both approaches to 3C 345, and observed the source at 7 different epochs (3 epochs with 3-mm ground VLBI, and 4 epochs with space VLBI at 6 cm and 18 cm). These measurements provide complementary information to earlier results with lower resolution. We discuss the properties of the jet and moving components in the immediate vicinity of the core (< 5 mas). The jet components show superluminal motion at diverse trajectories with different speeds and flux evolution. Our results will help to get a better understanding of the physical processes in compact extragalactic jets.
