Far-infrared Source Counts and the Diffuse Infrared Background

The population of sources which contributes to the Cosmic infrared background starts to be characterised by deep infrared and submillimeter surveys. The results from the surveys carried out with ISO in the far infrared will be reviewed. Using these results together with those obtained in the thermal infrared and the submillimeter range and minimal extra assumptions on this population it can be shown that the spectrum of the cosmic far-infrared background strongly constrains the redshift distribution of infrared galaxies. This is obtained by a systematic exploration of possible evolution histories of infrared galaxies confronted with present observations.
