Congruence modules in higher codimension and zeta lines in Galois cohomology
Abstract
In 1994, Wiles deduced Fermat's Last theorem, a problem that had resisted solution for over 350 y, from his proof of a more structural and central conjecture in number theory called the modularity conjecture for elliptic curves defined over the rational numbers. A key ingredient of Wiles' proof of modularity is a numerical criterion whose verification depends on subtle methods to study congruences between modular forms, initiated by Hida and Ribet. Recent work of the first three authors takes forward Wiles' numerical criterion into more complicated contemporaneous situations, involving modularity of other geometric objects of relevance to modern number theory. Our results in this paper further develop these ideas and obtain applications, in particular to Galois cohomology.
