Regularized kappa-distributions with non-diverging moments
Abstract
For various plasma systems the so-called κ-distribution is widely usedto describe suprathermal (non-relativistic) particle components exhibiting a power-law behaviour in velocity or energy. Despite its successthe concept of the standard κ-distribution remains disputable becausethe latter is defined only for κ > 3/2 and possesses only a finite numberof velocity moments v^{l} (with the integer l defining the l-th moment),some of which, i.e., l > 2κ _ 1, are diverging. In order to resolve theselimitations we introduce the regularized κ-distribution. After a discussion of its properties and its relation to the standard κ- as well as tothe Maxwellian distribution, we provide a general analytical expressionthat enables to calculate all of its moments, and illustrate that onlyfluid results, that critically depend on these moments will change, butnot those obtained within the framework of kinetic theory.
