First Families of Regular Polygons and their Mutations
Abstract
Every regular N-gon defines a canonical family of regular polygons which are conforming to the bounds of the 'star polygons' determined by N. These star polygons are formed from truncated extended edges of the N-gon and the intersection points determine a scaling which defines the parameters of the family. In [H4] we introduced these families and their scaling. Here we start from first-principles and extend these results about the underlying geometry before introducing any mapping. The first 3 sections will study the geometry of these First Families and the last two sections will show how this geometry evolves under a piecewise isometry such as the outer-billiards map tau. The 'singularity set' W of tau is formed by iterating the extended edges of N and it is sufficient to iterate just the truncated edges so this 'web' W can be regarded as a 'generalized' star polygon. We show that W can be reduced to a 'shear and rotation' which preserves the S[k] members of the First Family so W is the disjoint union of the local webs of the S[k]. These local webs are still very complex but Lemma 4.1 shows that the center of each S[k] has a constant step-k orbit around N. These 'resonant' orbits set bounds on global orbits and establish a connection between geometry and dynamics which is critical for a study of topology. But except for a few simple cases the large-scale topology of W is a mystery. We have made some progress recently with the 'edge' geometry of N where it appears that N-gons of the form 8k+j share similar edge geometry. In [H3] (2012) we devised a set of difference equations for the edge dynamics of N = 10 which has a well documented fractal structure. Now we have extended these equations to all members of this 8k+2 family so there is strong evidence about the local geometry and dynamics (hence topology) of all members of this family.

- A self-contained analysis with 55 pages and numerous 'clickable' examples. This revision has formulas for the periods of critical First Family S[k] 'tiles' in the edge geometry of the 8k+2 family. The geometric scaling of these tiles is also known, so their local topology can be determined for the first time
