Numerical Modeling of Wind Waves: Problems, Solutions, Verifications, and Applications
Abstract
We consider the transport equation for the 2-dimensional wave energy spectrum density, S, as the main evolution equation for wind waves. The heart of this equation is the source function, F, usually represented as a sum of three terms: the wind-wave energy exchange mechanism, In; the energy conservative mechanism of nonlinear wave-wave interactions, Nl; and the wave energy loss mechanism, Dis. The problem is to derive all these terms from the basic hydrodynamic equations. This problem is solved, and mathematical expressions for the terms are presented in an optimized form. The advantage of this presentation for the source function is verified and proved by modification of the well known wind wave models, WAM and WW. Some applications of a wind wave modelling for solving a series of practical tasks are presented.
