JWST/NIRCam imaging of PDS 70 - A spiral accretion stream feeding PDS 70 c
Abstract
Two protoplanets have been discovered within the protoplanetary disk of PDS 70 using ground-based facilities. JWST now offers a unique opportunity to characterize them at wavelengths inaccessible or difficult to observe from the ground. In this contribution, I will present our results obtained in two different NIRCam filters, F187N (1.87µm) and F480M (4.8µm) on the iconic PDS 70 system, as part of the MIRI GTO on protoplanetary disks. I will explain the new iterative algorithm that we developed and applied to the data for unbiased imaging of circumstellar signals. I will then present and discuss our new images. Apart from the known protoplanets, we identify a spiral-shaped signal which we interpret as the spiral accretion stream feeding planet c and its circumplanetary disk. We also observe an additional source adjacent to the inner disk which appears roughly consistent with the protoplanet candidate proposed in Mesa et al. (2019). I will also compare the NIRCam photometry extracted for protoplanets b and c to existing constraints gathered from the ground, and show that the 4.8µm measurement suggest some additional emission from the circumplanetary environment of the protoplanets. Our data set upper limits on Pa-alpha emission for protoplanet b, while the tentative Pa-alpha emission we measured for protoplanet c requires follow-up dedicated observations for confirmation.
