Making astronomy outreach careers visible
Abstract
This poster reflects on two separate but related projects: the first one is "Universe World", a bi-monthly interview series with astronomy / science communicators, researchers and educators from around the world, to explore career paths that led people to their current positions as well as professional trends, local and global challenges, and best practices. Launched in 2021, the column has featured almost 20 profiles at the time of writing. It is published on EduINAF, the outreach & education online magazine of the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics, both in English and Italian language. The second project is "Astronomy outreach jobs" (astronomyoutreachjobs.wordpress.com), a blog launched in February 2024 to collect open vacancies in the field of astronomy and space science outreach. The platform has a double purpose: primarily, to provide greater visibility in one single place to jobs that are regularly advertised around the world under the broad umbrella of public outreach and communication of astronomy. Besides, the blog also aims to create an archive displaying the wide variety of professional roles available in this field. During its first month, the platform received over 1000 visits and collected 32 job ads (however, most of them in Europe and North America so far) including a few proposed by members of the community. This experiment, run on a best-effort basis, wishes to spark a discussion on whether our community could actually benefit from such a platform and where it would be best hosted.
