Characterizing the Nature of Globular Cluster ULX Sources in NGC 1399
Abstract
This proposal requests to measure the X-ray and optical properties of ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) sources hosted by globular clusters (GCs) to better understand the accretion physics driving ULXs in the >10 Gyr GC environment. Very few GCs are known to host ULXs, but their number and natures have important implications for the theoretical predictions of LIGO sources. NGC 1399 is home to two of these GC ULXs. The X-ray spectra of these two sources are two extremes, one is soft with optical emission lines (likely the signature of outflows), while the other is hard. We will leverage multiwavelength observations to reveal the underlying accretion physics of these two objects, which has implications for the relative masses of the accretors.
